Friday, February 19, 1960...Opening night of "Annie Get Your Gun". There were so many talented chorus members that year, that two chorus members were chosen for each of the lead characters. One group starred in the evening performances and another in the matinee performance on Saturday afternoon. PENSACOLA HIGH SCHOOL BAND

William J. Holston
1930 - 2011

"Watch that sharp!" and "One more time!" are usual shouts heard in the PHS band room. Mr. Holston, and the student band leaders worked avidly trying to make their music soud like a professional organization, not like a high school band. The band is divided into several factions, such as the concert band, the marching band, and the dance band. A family within the school, the band selected a king and queen, chose the head majorette, and even had their own definite opinions about music. Mr. Holston, the "slave driver," managed to divert the band members long enough so that they could learn Chopin or "Dixie."

"The great success story in 1961 was, without a doubt, the record of the "Fighting Tiger" band. On this year the band attained greater honors and more recognition than any other previous Pensacola High School band or, for that matter, than any other PHS organization had ever achieved in the past. Exceptional talent and superb direction combined with relentless determination and unceasing toil proved to be the necessary ingredients to win national recognition. This was the year that PHS represented Florida at the John F. Kennedy Inauguration in Washington, D. C." 1961 Annona
