None for a while, I hope
In the past 50 years, I've managed to stay busy. I graduated from the University of Alabama, then on to graduate school, and finished my doctorate at the University of Georgia. I was a college professor for 7 years (University of New Orleans, LSU Medical Center). Continued my research career in the private sector, working for the Gallup Organization as well as some other large multinational marketing research companies. Last "real job" was Director of Insights for Outback International. My work required a good bit of travel to Asia and Latin America and, yes, I got to eat a lot of steak! I am a big Bama football fan. Spent 6 years owning and operating country inn (Vermont). Have lived in New Orleans, Lincoln (NE), Princeton, Germany (Koenigstein), Manhattan. Swam competitively until age 50, finished top 10 in nationals in multiple events--faster than when I swam for Crimson Tide in early 60's. Retired in 2013 and started Gaines Concealed Carry, teaching defensive firearms and certifying firearms instructors. Some of the places I've lived include Lincoln, Nebraska; Princeton, New York City, Germany, Phoenix, and Atlanta. I've been married to my college sweetheart, Carol McKee (Zeta, cheerleader), for 52+ years. Like everyone else, I can't believe that 50 years has passed. It only seems like yesterday when my mother was talking about her 50th. At the time, I wondered if anyone in her class were still alive! Ouch! And so, here we are, 50 years later. Where did the time go? |

After graduation, attended University of Florida, Gainesville, and PJC. My dad was transferred to South Carolina (Monsanto) in 1962 so I moved to Charlotte, NC to be close to my family. Married husband #1 in 1965, divorced in 1972. Married husband #2 in 1976 in Bucks County, PA. Traveled all over the globe. My husband is British and enjoys traveling to very remote destinations. I worked in the travel industry for over 40 years, first with Eastern Air Lines in Charlotte, NC, and later as a corporate travel agent in Charlotte, Philadelphia and Boston, eventually owning my own agency. Retired in 2005 and moved from Massachusetts to Lillian, Alabama, in 2010. We relocated to Pensacola in 2015, finally coming full circle. It is wonderful being home again and it has been especially rewarding reconnecting with old friends. I have truly enjoyed creating and maintaining our class website and I encourage everyone to send us any mementos you might find when cleaning out your drawers or closets. Old photographs, copies of Tiger Tales, any memorabilia of our days at PHS would be a welcome addition to our website. |

Eight girls and two boys
We have been privileged to serve with four Baptist churches (two in Florida, one in South Carolina and one in Kentucky) in various capacities: youth minister, outreach director, choir director, bus director, Associate Pastor and Senior Pastor. We ministered in our last church in Bradenton, FL, for 29 years. The Lord has been exceedingly gracious to us and to our family.Wish Helen and I could attend the 50th, but it simiply is not possible! So many great memories of our high school years... When anyone, during a Spanish Two test, would mindlessly "drum" a pencil on a desk, Miss Partridge, without looking up, would say, "Would somebody please shoot the drummer boy?!" One day a class set her up by having a student purposely drum his pencil during a test. Miss Partridge didn't look up, and as on cue, said, "Would somebody please shoot the drummer boy?!" Whereupon, someone fired off a starter pistol! (.22 blank) Miss Partridge jumped about three feet into the air, and after she gained her composure, joined in with the laughter and said, "OK, you really got me that time!" Wow. No lawsuits, no one jailed. Imagine what the result of that happening in a class nowadays would be? |

Following graduation I worked for Gulf Power. Married Fred King a PHS grad in 1962. Kim was born June 1965 and Fred (Ricky) in July 1966. This completed our family. We moved from Pensacola to New Orleans in 1967. This was followed by moves to Baton Rouge, Nashville, back to New Orleans and to Mobile in 1974. We were happy to be back close to Pensacola and parents. Wonderful years as the children grew. An active family, we enjoyed all water sports, fishing, riding dunes in our jeep, camping, board games and spent hours collecting and cataloging wreath pennies. Many hours devoted to ball park refreshment stands, scout leader and room mother at school. Always involved in church activities where ever we lived. As the children grew older I began a banking career with SouthTrust Bank. Graduated LSU Banking School. Served on committees with Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, Business Women of Alabama, and President of Mobile Exchange Civic Club for two terms. Enjoyed helping with Relay for Life and Exchange Club's Family Center organized to teach parenting skills to high risk families. I retired early in 2001 to spend precious time with husband Fred who died in 2002 from cancer. Now I provide care for my 89 year old Mother suffering dementia. Joy comes to me each day in many ways. A loving family, grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She also lives with me so I read books, play "dress-up", host tea parties, and her magic wand can turn me into an animal in seconds. Her natural curiosity, imagination and "smarts" amaze me while giving me hope for her future. |

Wow, you would not believe. Spent a year in college, went to Miami for a year before joining the Air Force. Assigned to a TAC Mobility Command as an aircraft mechanic and went all over the world including southeast Asia. Married my little Texas gal and went back to school. Raised 4 kids. Worked for Budweiser in Houston, as an Instrument Technician, Started my own Rubber Stamp Manufacturing Company and sold it after 8 years. Went back to school and became an I & E Designer, working for engineering companies in engineering and design groups designing Control Systems for Chemical plants, Pipelines and Refineries. Retired in 2003 and became an Insurance adjuster working Katrina in Mississippi and Wilma in Miami in 2005. Then I came out of retirement in 2006 when the Oil Industry came back alive. Going to retire again in April before the Reunion and my little darlin and I are going to travel the USA in our RV for a coupla years. Then we will probably go on a Mission for our Church.I came to Texas in the Air Force and met a little texas gal, married her and when I got out of the Air Force I couldn't get her or her horse out of Texas. So I stayed here. In fact this gal is so Texan that if I had taken her name when we got married I would be Jim Bowie (Buie). UPDATE: Today is June 11, 2022. I am celebrating my 80th birthday with my darling wife, 3 of our 4 wonderful kids (4th one in California), 4 grandchildren, my wife's sister and my best friend and his wife. This November my darling wife and I will celebrate our 57th year of a wonderful marriage. Like "Sachmo" says....It has been a wonderful life. And we owe it all to our Savior, Jesus Christ! Oh, did I mention that I have beat Cancer 4 times. After they tried to kill me with Chemo, I did a lot of research and self medicated. 4 CT scans over the past year they have found no cancer. But above all, I must give the credit for my cure to our Heavenly Father. Through prayer and Blessings from our Church Elders, HE led me to the cure. |

I have interests in "energy efficient green housing" using insulated panels, and in biofuels from algae. I enjoy gardening, spending time at the family cabin in the Smoklies.

I enjoy playing golf and tennis and try to keep up my proficiency with flying light aircraft. I am the ethics officer for a group of about 20 central Florida hospitals and I stay very engaged in ethical activity in healthcare and other industries. I am retired from the aerospace industry and hope that my next career will be as a flight instructor. At various times I have been employed by the federal government, large aerospace and healthcare companies and self-employed. Although I have lived other places, I have spent most of my life in Florida. I love playing golf and tennis (when my knees cooperate) and am thankful for having a plane to fly and a convertible to drive.

After graduation I joined the Army Reserve. Came home and went to work at Chemstrand while attending PJC as a lab technician. Was there for 20 years. In July of 1962, married Juanita (Nita) Waldrop. If she had lived until July of 2012, we would have been married for 50 years. We had three children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. In 1990, I moved to Century to manage Church's Chicken, both in Flomaton and Atmore. Retired in 2005 to take care of my wife who had a stroke and was bedridden. I now work in my church teaching Sunday school along with working in my woodworking shop and on my computer.

I am living a simple, and gloriously fulfilling, life on the seven-mile-square island of my dreams in the Caribbean Sea. I first visited the Caribbean in 1975. On a sailing trip to islands of the Lesser Antilles, in 1978, our family discovered tiny, obscure Bequia. The color, light, flora, fauna, and people kept me coming back to paint and write, even though I had traveled elsewhere. In 1999, I rented an old island house in the harbor and created a studio where I still continue to paint and show my work.
In 2006, Doug and I became permanent citizens here and bought a dramatic stone, glass, and wood house, we named "Zeebreeze" in memory of our son, Zachary. It is perched high above Spring Plantation with a vast view of coconut groves and the Atlantic Ocean far below. In 1999, Macmillan Caribbean published a book of my art work, BEQUIA REFLECTIONS, An Artist in the Caribbean. This book, and my artwork, have made their way throughout the world. That same year, I rented Mango Tree Cottage and established a studio, which I still maintain. In 2005, I published a book with Xlibris, USA, about the adventures of my 89-year-old British landlady, Dr. Vivian Child: TO AN ISLAND IN AFRICA, Working, Walking, and Painting in Tanzania, 1951-1953. Islands Magazine wrote a one-page feature about me and our move in the July/August 2008 issue. I am working on a picture book about a fellow artist who has traveled from Australia to our little island for years to paint the traditional life here. I continue to find new ways to paint and write about this island so full of color and life, where I meet fascinating people from all over the world. "Google: Julie Savage Lea" www.amazon.com is featuring coffee table book: Tropical Homes of the Eastern Caribbean. The chapter about me and my studio, Mango Tree Cottage, is on page 236 and shows up on Amazon listing. I teach art classes to visitors during the winter season and deliver art supplies and lead classes for island children throughout the year. I've restored two big paintings for our oldest church on the island and painted murals in restaurants and once for a luxury yacht. The waters here have that same emerald-green and turquoise colors as the Gulf of Mexico, but the sands are golden, not the white, quartz sand of Pensacola Beaches...however, there are PALM TREES along the shores...and I was always dreaming of such beaches..in spite of the beauty of the Gulf shores. We feel really blessed each day. Still, the price "to pay" is being so far away from friends and family, and, next month, from seeing PHS Classmates. But you guys are doing a great job, and I'm enjoying looking at the online pages. Editor's Note: Last January, The Wall Street Journal published Julie's article about her move to the Caribbean in the Encore section. Click HERE to see a copy of the article. |
