Frederica Leslie Greer

The world lost a remarkable lady when Frederica Leslie Hawk Greer passed away on July 18, 2020. She began her life's journey as the child of Maudie Mae Brantley and Frederic Leslie Hawk. Her father, a L&N engineer, died from injuries received in a train wreck shortly before her birth. Her stepfather, Hugh Edward Jordan, she called "Daddy" & was the ony father she knew. As a young child, she thrived under the love of her mama, her daddy, her sisters, her grandparents, and her extended family.
Frederica was educated in Escambia County schools: N.B.Cook Elementary School, A.V. Clubbs Junior High School, Pensacola High School, and Pensacola Junior College. She then completed a bachelors degree in elementary education at Florida State and a masters degree at Long Island University.
Her early education at N.B.Cook impacted her more than most children because she went on to spend 42 years of her life in elementary schools. She taught briefly in Tallahassee and in Michigan, but most of those years were spent teaching first graders at Oradell Elementary School in New Jersey. Imagine how many children learned to read under her tutelage. Even after retiring, she enjoyed working as a crossing guard at an elementary school. She always had a passion for children's learning.
Beyond education, Frederica's interests were varied. Woodworking was a special hobby. Family members and friends were thrilled to receive some of her unique woodworking creations as presents. Additionally, she loved the hours spent riding her motorcycle and her horse. She also served as the president of the local New Jersey Friends of the Library, and she belonged to several lineage organizations including UDC and DAR. She was especially interested in Florida's DAR library.
She is now joined in death with her mother; father; daddy; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn Hawk Wiseman and Cecil Wiseman; nephew, Gary Wiseman; brother-in-law, Walt Hazen, and her grandparents. Loved ones who survive her include her daughter and son-in-law, Angela Greer and Ken Alutin, New York; her sister and brother-in-law, Marsena Hawk Smith and Dr. Rodney Smith, Pensacola; her sister, Martha Jordan Hazen, St. Augustine; her dear friend, Tony Pistilli; and nieces and nephews, Gail Wiseman, Glenn Wiseman, Jordan Hazen, Allison Hazen, and Michael Smith. Frederica will always live in their hearts.
