Graduation

SENIORS  1960

"The last year, almost over and we're still here, through geometry, four years of English, and other cruel tortures commonly found in those ivy covered walls.  But however much harder, or more work, or possibly more play, the Senior year will be the most memorable in the years which we now look forward to.  And this year has really shown some memorable happenings, not to mention our fabulous victories.  There have been monkeys sailing by over our heads, and for a change we took to the sea, under it instead of skiing over it.  We watched the Beatniks in California and had a few fair imitations around campus even.  Cold weather brought on those brightly colored legs again - red, green, black, and even blue - with the newest footwear, Boots.

Art appreciation has ranged from Kerouac to the still popular Pasternak, from the old masters on exhibit in  our own library to the newest in modern art, from Jerry Mulligan to Van Cliburn playing Tchaikovsky, and the Kingston Trio still reigns, pouring forth their ballads at every party.

And so the year has passed, bringing around the many fads and events which make a Senior year so specially unforgettable.  But most unforgettable of all are the friends we have made and the experiences that we have shared.  And after all the other memories grow dim, we shall never forget these. "   1960 PHS Annona

Friday, June 3, 1960...Graduation Day!  Parents and students gathered at the Municipal Auditorium, and we began our walk down the aisle to receive our diplomas at 7:30 pm.  In the words of the Beach Boys song:  "There's a time for joy, a time for tears, a time we'll treasure through the years.  We'll remember always graduation day."  I'm sure many of us couldn't wait to shed our caps and gowns and get to our graduation after parties.

I save things.  I save lots of things.  I suppose I am trying to hold on to my past.  Letters which date back to early childhood.  Letters from people I barely remember.  I even found a sign-out sheet from my college dorm.  (I wonder if they still do that?)  I was a features writer on The Tiger’s Tale staff and recently I discovered an article I had written shortly before graduation. I don’t even know why I saved it but it seems somehow appropriate to include it in this section of graduation mementos. Click HERE if you would like to read the musings of an 18 year old almost graduate with her future just beginning to unfold.

CLASS SONG

(Tune:  Auld Lang Syne)

Farewell to thee, our PHS,
We love thy grounds, thy halls.
We are thy children, thee our guide;
We love thee one and all.

You've led us on through youth and fear;
You've taught us how to love,
To live and laugh and work for all,
To strive for goals above.

Oh, true to thee through all our life
We'll hold thy banners high;
We'll love thee long in peace and truth
Until the day we die.

You've taught us how to face the world,
To reach up for the sky,
We pledge our lives, our loves, our dreams
To Pensacola High.

ALMA MATER

Hail to thee, our Alma Mater,
True to thee we'll be.
To thy teachings and thy standards,
True eternally.

Pensacola, Pensacola
Is our ringing cry;
Loyal to our Alma Mater,
Pensacola High.

As we gather here together,
We thy praises sing;
Like a challenge down the future,
Proudly let them ring.

Pensacola, Pensacola
Is our ringing cry;
Loyal to our Alma Mater,
Pensacola High
