Comment:
I graduated from Pensacola Junior College, before I joined the Peace Corps. I was among the first Volunteers, arriving in Peru long before the first groups returned to the U.S. I served in a breakfast feeding program for the schools in Chimbote. The neighborhood kids came to my house after school most days for games and fun with my wall size maps of Peru, the world, and the United States We looked for places they had family, or that were in the news that day. My house was two small rooms made of split cane mats with a dirt floor. Life was different, but I made a difference in lives. I still think I learned more and gained more than they did. I was in the first graduating class of Mobile College when I returned from the Peace Corps. I met and married a Pensacola girl at Mobile College, which is now the University of Mobile. While teaching at Ferry Pass Middle School, I graduated form the University of West Florida with an M. A. in elementary education. I enrolled in Nova University doctorial program, but didn't finish. I have been certified in several fields. My 34.5 years with the Escambia County Schools include assistant principal, civics teacher, curriculum coordinator, school social worker, and homeless advocate. I spent eight years working with the homeless through the school system. When I was informed about a possible state grant for districts to assist the homeless, I worked with the grant writer to apply. The grant was one of the first in the state to be approved as Project TOuCH. Project TOuCH has provided tutors, field trips, bus passes, computers, and software at the area shelters, books, backpacks, personal items, home visits, and referrals for the families. Project REACH, (Reaching, Educating, and Assisting Children of the Homeless) was proposed when I retired from the school system. It is fortunate for me that I can be busy about the best part of my old job on a part time basis. The contract for Project REACH is with the Title I office and the EcsaRosa Coalition On the Homeless (ECOH). The ECOH contract is with title I of Escambia County Schools, and I fill that contract with a personal contract to provide the services. My family has always been involved in helping. For the past 16 years I have been directly involved in assisting the poor and homeless. For most of that time I have been responsible for the collection and organization of information in the Street Survival Guide, a directory of community agencies. The last few editions have been edited by First Call for Help of Escambia County. I am still responsible for finding funds and arranging printing. I have served as pastor for several small Baptist churches in our area while they searched for a pastor. I currently serve as the Minister to Senior Adults at Brownsville Baptist Church. Both of my sisters have worked in a children's home, one is church staff member now, the other ran a before and after school program with the YMCA. One brother has helped organize a new church, and assisted with other projects for children. The other brother has started a prison ministry in Texas. My parents were concerned about others and especially children. Mother stayed active in PTA, Girls Auxiliary at church, Girl Scouts, and with the Baptist Children's Home. Dad helped with Boy Scouts. I have been involved in helping people all my life. 2012-08-06 14:51:51 |

Comment:
I have enjoyed a life filled with love and support from my family allowing me to enjoy activities which are prominment in my life: the Three T's - Tennis, Trombone and Travel. I continue to play trombone in a number of volunteer as well as professional groups. I perform with four instrumental groups, a concert band, two dance bands and the church orchestra. I also ring handbells at the church. Tennis is also an activity I found addictive in college at Auburn. I play USTA league tennis and a few tournaments including the Senior women's Nationals 60's where I hold a national ranking in the top 25. Sixty plus years of playing trombone and fifty plus years of playing tenis and both are still fun! I have just received the 2014 Alabama State Volunteer of the Year award from the Alabama Tennis Association presented at the Hall of Ame induction ceremony in Montgomery. In recognition of community service, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle presented me with a proclamation declaring March 19, 2009 as Dottie Robinson Day. Huntsville Women's Tennis Association also presensted me with a beautiful silver tray recognizing my many years of service to that organization. The 3rd T is travel. Jay and I spend the mid winter months in south Texas for a break from north Alabama winter. We usually take a three week trip to a different part of our country in the summer. There are by far fewer states that we have not visited than those that we have visited. Mexico, the Dominican Republic, China, Canada and Greece are among the foreign countries we have visited. Life is good and good health is a blessing. |

Fifty years out of high school, where have the years gone? For me, a wonderful marriage of 42 years, two grown boys, two daughters in law (the daughters I never had), a precious grandson, a career with the Lake County School Board, Tavares, FL, and now retirement, which I recommend highly, even though it's only been three months. I enjoy my family, being with friends, traveling, gardening, knitting, going to the movies, and trying to eat right and exercise to stay healthy. |
